Revolutionary Body Contouring – Vaser Liposuction in Melbourne

Vaser Liposuction targets specific areas of the body, and uses ultrasonic waves to break up and separate fat cells for removal, while leaving other tissue unharmed. Vaser Liposuction is so precise and gentle that patients typically report dramatic reshaping with little downtime. Here at DermaMed, we are the vaser liposuction surgery specialists in Hawthorn, Melbourne, here to create the shape you desire at an affordable cost.

The Vaser Lipo Difference

Unlike traditional liposuction, Vaser Lipo results in less trauma and faster recovery. Vaser Lipo uses a minimally invasive technique to selectively break apart and gently remove unwanted fat. To begin the procedure, the targeted area is injected with a special solution known as tumescent solution. Tumescent solution numbs the target area and shrinks local blood vessels.

It also temporarily expands the volume of the targeted area, making fat cells easier to break up and remove. Small-diameter probes are then inserted into the body through small incisions, and by resonating at a high ultrasonic frequency, the probes literally shake loose fat cells — while leaving blood vessels, nerves and connective tissues unharmed. The loose fat cells then mix with the tumescent fluid, which is removed from the body using gentle suction.

Fast Facts about Vaser Lipo

  • Liposuction is suitable for both men and women of many ages.
  • Consultation with our doctors is required to ascertain your fitness and suitability for the procedure, fit you for a compression garment, to take pre-operative measurements and photos, and most importantly, for you to discuss your needs and concerns.

The Consultation Process

General Considerations

Liposuction is a body shaping procedure and is suitable for those who have areas of fat that are not proportionate to the rest of their body. It is a procedure that is commonly performed on people of all ages and body shapes.

Who cannot have liposuction?

Those who are pregnant, breast-feeding, have serious blood clotting disorders or bleeding disorders, and those who have significant medical problems such as significant cardiac or respiratory problems may not be suitable to have liposuction. It is also important to have any significant abdominal or inguinal hernias surgically repaired prior to liposuction of this area.

The consultation

The first step is to have a consultation with one of our friendly doctors. During this consultation, the doctor will review your general medical health, fitness, weight, medications, allergies, previous anaesthetics and operations. Once your suitability for liposuction has been determined, you will be able to discuss your areas of concern with the doctor, and the doctor will help you decide what is feasible as well as what areas to treat to achieve the best outcome.

You will also be examined during the procedure and can discuss and point out the areas that concern you. The doctor will assess your shape and fat distribution to advise you what areas might be best treated to ensure that your proportions are balanced after liposuction, and you will be measured and fitted for a compression garment that needs to be worn after the procedure. You may also be given a script for prophylactic antibiotics, and analgesics (Panadeine Forte) to be taken after the procedure.

You are not required to fast prior to the procedure and may have a light breakfast or lunch. You will need to arrange for a family member or friend to drive you home. On your arrival, you will have your pre-operative consultation with your doctor before the procedure. Your doctor will mark and photograph the areas to be treated. Furthermore, an intravenous cannula may be inserted into the back of your hand, and this will allow your doctor to give you some sedative and analgesia intravenously for the procedure.

The procedure itself is a 3 stage process:

Stage One

As liposuction is a sterile procedure, your skin is cleaned with antiseptic solution. Small incisions (around 0.5 cm) are made in the skin (using local anaesthetic) at various locations to allow access to the fat to be removed. In most cases, they are made in inconspicuous areas such as a skin crease, so they cannot be seen once healed. The number of incisions made will usually depend on the area treated, and the access required. From these incisions, the tumescent solution is infiltrated into the fat of the treatment area. The tumescent solution is a mix of (very dilute) local anaesthetic to provide pain relief during and after the operation, sodium bicarbonate – this reduces the discomfort from the administration of the local anaesthetic and adrenaline which this helps to constrict the surrounding blood vessels. By doing so, this reduces bleeding, bruising and keeps the local anaesthetic from being absorbed into the systemic circulation. Once the local anaesthetic solution has been infiltrated into the fat, the area becomes swollen, and the fat layer becomes expanded, allowing for easier fat removal. The skin overlying the area also becomes temporarily blanched from the adrenaline in the local anaesthetic solution.

Stage Two

The VASER probe is inserted into the anaesthetised area and uses ultrasonic waves (sound energy) to break up and liquefy the unwanted fat while preserving other important tissues. This process is performed for the entire areas being treated before any fat is removed, which is the the next stage of the procedure. As this is a gentle procedure, blood loss and tissue trauma is minimsed when compared to traditional liposuction.

Stage Three

Finally, the liquefied fat is removed through a gentle suction process designed to minimise trauma to surrounding tissue structures such as nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. A suction cannula (a thin metal tube with a blunt tip and small holes at the end) is then inserted through the areas to systematically to remove the emulsified fat. The doctor will constantly be assessing the areas treated for fat thickness and evenness by visual examination and pinching the area. The end-point for liposuction is not when all the fat is removed, but when enough fat is removed to provide a smooth contour and shape.

After Going Home

Some of the entry points are then left open for drainage of the infiltrated local anaesthetic, and some are closed with a single suture. Once the procedure is finished, a dressing is adhered to the open skin port locations to help soak up the drainage. On top of this, the compression garment is fitted. The compression garment needs to be worn for 4-8 weeks (see post procedure for more information) and helps reduce swelling, bruising, and most importantly help the skin retract after the removal of the fat.

After the Procedure

There is normally drainage of pinkish fluid from the wounds for up to 24-48 hours. Usually the local anaesthetic given during the procedure takes a number of hours (up to 24 hours) to wear off, so you may not require any pain relief for some time after the procedure. The pain from Vaser liposuction is often likened to muscle soreness after a heavy workout at the gym, and in most cases still permits you to do light activities. Your normal exercise routine can be resumed usually after one to two weeks once the discomfort has settled down. You will be able to return to work in most cases after a few days, but this depends on the number of areas treated, your recovery speed, and your line of work. You will be given an analgesia such as Panadeine Forte which can be used for pain post procedure if and when required. You will need to commence your antibiotics the day of the procedure and continue this for 5 days. The compression garment needs to be worn as directed by your doctor after the procedure.

Follow Up Appointments

The first review appointment with your doctor occurs 1-2 weeks after the procedure. At this appointment, you will be assessed to make sure that your recovery is in line with our expectations, and also to have any stitches removed. A further follow up appointment is then made at 3 months when most of the results should be evident (though it may take up to 6 months for all the swelling to subside and the final results to show). During any time during the post-operative period should you require medical attention, you will be able to contact the clinic. Many patients report that they see results immediately after the procedure with the final result around three to six months. Your doctor can help you establish realistic expectations.

Cost of Vaser Liposuction

The price of Vaser liposuction in Melbourne will depend on which areas are treated and the number of areas treated, but start at only $1990 per area. All pre-and post-liposuction review appointments are included in the price. Compression garments are approximately $200 each (depending on number of areas covered), and are charged in addition to the price of your liposuction. Due to the fact that this is a cosmetic procedure, it does not attract rebates from Medicare or private health insurance.

It is important to understand that certain areas may need to be done in conjunction with others in order to achieve the best cosmetic result. For example, it may be necessary to treat the hips/flanks if the outer thighs are being treated, otherwise they may look out of proportion. Therefore, a consultation with our doctors is required to ascertain how to get the best results for your body and the final costs.

*Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
